Record Breaking Bingo Games
Ah, records! What’s the point in having ‘em if you aren’t going to break ‘em? You’ve probably heard of some of the world’s most popular records being broken all the time in sports, architecture and much more.
The folks over at the Guinness World Records have been keeping track of all sorts of weird and wonderful human and animal behaviour since the early 1950s. Thanks to them, we know that Nick “The Lick” Stoeberl from California has the longest tongue in the world at 10.10cm; that Alley the Cat (owned by Samantha Martin of Austin, Texas) managed to make the longest jump by a cat at 182.88cm, and that the longest golf club in the world, used by Karsten Maass in Denmark, was 4.37m long.
What you may not have heard of in the history books, however, is about some of the most important bingo records ever set. From the “highest” game and the quickest jackpot ever won, to the game with the biggest balls, here are just some of the most famous world-breaking bingo games in both the traditional and online bingo world.
The biggest real life bingo game ever played
Bogotá, Columbia is famous for many things, such as being the capital city and the place where Pablo Escobar famously escaped prison (not for the first time). But another one of the tidbits about the city that might interest you is that it also hosted the biggest bingo game ever played.
Organised by Almacenes Exito S.A., the largest retailer in South America, the game took place on the 2nd of December 2006. Now, if you’re used to your local bingo hall, you may think that 100 people probably broke this record, but in fact, 70,080 bingo enthusiasts showed up to take part! The £250,000 worth of prizes may have had something to do with that. We can only imagine how much fun this game must have been, although shouting “BINGO!” and being heard properly was probably a bit of a challenge...
Largest game of online bingo
All this talk about Columbia jogged our memory about the biggest game played on an online bingo site. Coca-Cola Japan decided the time was right to break the online bingo record on the 3rd of September 2010 and they did so in style. A whopping 493,824 players took part! We can just imagine that the bingo chat room banter was something to behold.
The highest game ever
In our personal opinion, there’s already tons of adrenaline involved in the bingo process. Waiting in anticipation for your numbers to be called, dabbing them off your card and then building up to the big moment has always been enough to float our boat.
But for this next record, these folks just weren’t satisfied with a game of bingo after work and apparently getting extremely high seemed to be the next best option. Now when we say high, we mean 17,500 ft above sea level high.
The record for the highest bingo game ever played goes to the people who climbed Mount Everest and played a spot of bingo while they were up there. The game was all for a good cause to raise money for the Sue Ryder Foundation charity.
Most money won in a bingo hall
Soraya Lowell hit her local bingo hall in not-so-sunny Scotland on the 25th of March 2008, probably hoping to enjoy a couple of pints with her gals and then head home with a bit of extra quid. She certainly got more than she bargained for at Club 3000 that evening and walked away with the heaviest of pockets. She won the biggest ever bingo hall prize — the National Bingo Game Platinum Jackpot of £1,167,795.
We’re not jealous, you are. Okay, we all are. We’re all very jealous.
Quickest ever jackpot
Some people just have beginner’s luck, but let’s be honest, when it comes to bingo, how many of us have won something substantial the first time around? We’re guessing not that many. Well, on the 22nd of January 2010, Lady Luck was clearly in a fine mood when Darryl Howe created his first-ever bingo account. Resembling something akin to the Oprah Winfrey show, Lady Luck handed Howe £18,000 after just 23 calls. He had had his account for approximately 40 minutes. Sigh, so it goes!
The world’s biggest balls
Not only have bingo fans scaled Mount Everest, but they have also managed to get hold of the biggest set of balls ever used in bingo. This particular group broke a record in aid of raising funds for testicular cancer and played with 60.1 cm balls that were thrown from building windows. They managed to break a world record for the size of their balls, as well as raising £10,000 for the cause.
Biggest office game of bingo
What’s better than not actually working when in the office? Playing bingo in it of course. The year was 2012 and Task Us in the Philippines decided it was time to fob off on the work for a bit and organise a cracking game of bingo for their employees, all 97 of them. This was the biggest ever bingo game played in an office. Nothing like a good work-play bingo balance!
Best online bingo site for banter
In another world record, taking the prize from some of the world’s best bingo sites, Lucky Pants Bingo broke the record for having the sharpest banter in the bingo world. Okay, maybe we’re stretching the truth here a bit… no records were broken in the making of this self-made title.
However, if you’re perhaps looking to break a record of your own, Lucky Pants Bingo is the place to be! With a whole host of online bingo games, slots, jackpots, and scratchcards you stand a chance of walking away with the big one every time you play.
