Most Popular Online Games Played by Celebrities

Celebrities may have to work long hours to be the best of the best, but they know how important it is to take the time to relax as well. Even though many A-listers can afford to pay for some of the most expensive experiences the world has to offer, sometimes they just want to sit back, relax, and enjoy their favourite online games. From Call of Duty to online bingo games, we take a look at some of the most popular titles that superstars love to play.

Call of Duty

Call of Duty has grown to become a truly global, multibillion-dollar franchise played by gamers all over the world. Originally starting life as a historical Second World War action shooter, the series has since taken players into present-day warfare, the future, and back to the past. Some of the most popular Call of Duty titles include Modern Warfare 1, Black Ops II, and one of the latest editions, Warzone.

This mega-popular series is also enjoyed by many big names in Hollywood and the music industry, including Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Ice-T, and the Canadian actor Will Arnett.

Fortnite

The second game on our list is another action-shooter title, although this one’s a little zanier than many of the others on our list. This hit game allows players to pick from some of pop culture’s most popular characters and features a number of dances that have become so popular that people now do them in real life.

When it comes to gameplay, players can choose from a variety of modes that see you battle alongside or against other players, although the most popular way to play is undoubtedly the game’s battle royale, or “last player standing” option. In battle royale, players are air-dropped onto an island from a flying bus (we did say this game was a bit crazy!). They must then use guns and different weapons to eliminate their opponents, all while building forts so that they can gain an advantage over their foes (which makes sense, considering the game’s title).

Despite appealing to a mostly young audience, many celebrities are not shy about declaring their love for the game, including Drake, Chance the Rapper, Philadelphia 76ers’ Ben Simmons, and Julian Brandt of Borussia Dortmund fame.

Halo

Halo is the third and last shooter on our list, but unlike our first two action games, this game’s roots are firmly set in the science-fiction genre. In this game, players take on the role of a Spartan, one of a group of genetically modified elite warriors who battle to protect Earth against alien invaders. This series may not have as many different games as Call of Duty, but its fans are just as passionate, with some players queueing overnight to get their hands on the latest editions!

It’s not just the genre that makes this game different, as players also join the heat of battle using a variety of futuristic weaponry and tools. This includes a slew of vehicles such as hoverbikes, trucks, and alien aircraft, although you can still show off your skills while running around on foot if you so choose.

Some of the big names you might recognise who play this sci-fi epic are Zac Efron, Snoop Dogg (again), and Daniel Craig. It seems that Halo’s another one of those A-lister magnets!

League of Legends

League of Legends is a mobile online battle area (MOBA) where two teams of five people apiece control a fantasy character with special powers and abilities. The game’s end goal is to destroy the opposing team’s base. It may be one of the world’s most popular games (with over 100 million people playing every month), but surprisingly it hasn’t quite made its way into the mainstream in the same way as other games.

Where non-gamers may recognise titles like FIFA, Call of Duty and Fortnite, League (as it’s more commonly known) has yet to make its way into Western pop culture. This may be because it's relatively difficult to get into compared with many other games, as it blends elements of strategy with role-playing, and requires a great amount of team coordination in order to succeed. Still, if you persevere and get over the steep learning curve, you’re undoubtedly in for a great time.

If you have Netflix, you may also be familiar with this game, as the streaming service recently released Arcane, a nine-episode animated series based on characters from League. Far from being a cheap cash-grab aimed at fans, Arcane offers viewers a dark and surprisingly deep story that has captured the imagination of some people who had never heard of the game itself.

Celebrities who put in the time and effort to learn this incredible game long before it became a hit TV show include Simon Pegg, Aisha Tyler, and all the members of the band Imagine Dragons (who have even produced some hit songs for the game).

World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft (or WoW) is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) set in the fantasy Warcraft universe. It was once incredibly popular, and even though it’s not quite the gaming behemoth it once was, it has cemented its place in popular culture, thanks to the likes of South Park, Family Guy, The Big Bang Theory, and even My Name Is Earl. In this fantasy role-playing game, players choose one of many magical and powerful races and classes from two main opposing factions: the Alliance, and the Horde. Become a powerful orc warrior, a mystical elven mage, or fight against evil as a mighty human paladin!

While the game does have player-versus-player combat once you reach a certain level, most people play the player-versus-environment or co-op parts of the game, where you can join a group of friends in completing quests and fighting epic monsters in special dungeon quests.

Famous players who you’d be surprised to hear have played this game include Henry Cavill, Mila Kunis, and even Cameron Diaz.

Online slots

Slots have become a staple of casino life, with many players spinning the reels at casinos or playing slots online, hoping Lady Luck will favour them. These games cover a huge variety of themes, including Ancient Egyptian and Greek mythology, sports, famous musicians, sci-fi, and much more. They also offer players a variety of ways to play, from the standard (or, you might say, retro) gameplay of yesteryear to newer titles that have all sorts of extra bonus games, including lottery wheels.

Many rich and famous people have shared that they like to try their luck at slots, including Bruce Willis, George Clooney, and Pamela Anderson. While some of these celebs are better known for spending their time at a casino, it wouldn’t be surprising if they dabbled in online slots from time to time too.

Online bingo

Bingo is a classic game that’s been enjoyed by many for generations. All you need to do in this easy-to-play game is mark off numbers on your card as they’re randomly chosen, and if you complete a row or winning pattern, shout “bingo” and claim your prize! That’s all there is to it, which is probably why so many people have been drawn to this game, whether it’s played by families, friends, or groups at bingo clubs or bingo sites.

Some of the most famous people who’ve been spotted playing bingo or have made no secret of their love of the beautiful numbers game include Catherine Zeta-Jones, Cristiano Ronaldo, Russell Crowe and Robbie Williams.
