Everyone loves a good British summer, but the truth is that most of us have probably had hangovers that last longer. Before you know it, those sunny evenings at the pub until 10 pm start to fade away and we have to put our brilliantly pale bodies away for another year.

Winter is undoubtedly on the way and while autumn is around for a month or two to ease us into it, there’s no denying the fact that we’re going to spend a lot more time at home for the next couple of months.

So, how to keep yourself out of the doldrums as you think of all those lucky folks over in the southern hemisphere sunning themselves and enjoying a cold pint? Well, for starters, watching a good bunch of films or organising a bingo evening with your mates is certainly a great way to keep the winter blues at bay.

What films to watch this winter?

Listen, we know it’s not the most exciting thing on this year’s social calendar, but films are an excellent way to escape a particularly cold and dreary British winter for a few hours. There’s an unlimited amount of films to choose from and if you’re wondering which one to watch, then we’ve got you covered with some of our favourite films for different moods.

Films for cosying up

Let’s get the romantic drivel out the way, shall we? Jokes! — although we’d never admit it in public, romantic comedies actually warm up our cold hearts. If you feel like snuggling up with your partner or pet on the couch, then winter is the perfect time to crack out some good old fashioned romance films.

If you’re looking for something with a classic English rose, then The Holiday it is! Kate Winslet is ravishing and the whole film is a feel-good romance set to warm the cockles of your heart. When Harry Met Sally is a classic old school romance of best friends becoming lovers that we just can’t get enough of!

And of course, no romantic film list would be quite complete without British classics Love Actually and Notting Hill.

Film marathons

Sometimes winter simply calls for film marathons. We love them because they take up a lot of time, they transport you to fantastical lands, and there’s a chance your better half hasn’t seen them and you get to force them to sit through hours of your favourite films.

First up, we have the epic of all epics, where there’s a little something for everyone! Short people, people with pointy ears, horses, elves, orcs and everything else in between — no one can ever get tired of rewatching The Lord of The Rings trilogy. Next up, there’s the magical world of Harry Potter, which is perfect for adults and kids alike. And lastly, Star Wars proves that there’s family drama even in the outer galaxies of the universe.

Have a giggle

There’s not too much to be cheerful about when you don’t see the sun for a couple of months and if you’re not getting your serotonin elsewhere, then films may be as good a source as you can get.

Thor Ragnarok is a great film, as well as being hella funny, and is a wonderful film for cold winter evenings. If you’re missing the pub, then The Hangover is sure to remind you that everything should be done in moderation. Knocked Up starring Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigl is an absolute go-to in order to get a workout for those abs.

Take a virtual holiday

We don’t know about you, but we don’t know one person who isn’t tempted to sell up and go live on a beach and drink Pina Coladas for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, most of us have to settle for infrequent holidays. These are the films that might help you feel like you’re not surrounded by sleet, snow and perpetual darkness.

Baywatch has something for the blokes and birds with ripped bodies, warm weather and some good laughs for a nice evening in. Under the Tuscan Sun might be a little more tempting for the ladies, but this film will certainly make you feel like you are away on holiday.

Have a games night

Sure, everyone loves a good film marathon, but you can’t spend all winter in front of your TV screen! So why not organise a game night with friends and family? Bingo games are a great way to get your favourite people together for an evening of banter and a few drinks. You could choose to play online bingo games from a bingo site or just regular in-person bingo!
